The medium's expansive specific surface area enhances efficiency, allowing each square meter of filtration area to capture up to 7.3 kg of solid suspension per backwash cycle. This remarkable load capacity greatly prolongs the filtration cycle and minimizes the frequency of backwashes. The sophisticated backwash system employs both gas and water, with the backwash effluent typically redirected to the biological treatment unit's upstream section. Thanks to the heightened interception capability of the filter bed solids, the backwash water usage remains under 4% of the total treatment plant's water volume.
